Microsoft has taken their own shot at the world of virtual and augmented reality with the Microsoft Hololens. The Hololens, unlike the majority of the headsets/glasses will feature augmented reality instead of virtual reality.

The difference between augmented and virtual reality being that virtual reality puts you into a new world while augmented reality incorporates new things into the real world. PokemonGo is a great example of AR, you can use your phone's camera to see Pokemon. However smartphones aren't AR devices, you can see Pokemon but that's about as far as your smartphone can go in the world of AR.

The Microsoft Hololens features multiple cameras that allow for finger tracking. This means that you can control the headset and interact with the AR by simply using your hands. There is a small computer that is built into the headset that allows the headset to be completely wireless as well.

This isn't the first augmented reality headset, many people have forgotten the failure that was Google Glass. The two biggest problems with google glass was that you still needed to touch the headset and that there was no useful or engaging software for the headset. The fact that you need to touch the headset made it useless as your phone was much more convenient. Luckily Microsoft's Hololens doesn't require you to click buttons on the side of the headset. The problem of software is a problem that is harder for Microsoft to address. However Microsoft have tried to get developers to consider the Hololens by releasing the development version of the Hololens for $3,000. This will allow developers to demo the headset and then develop software for it.

There has been no release date announced for the public version of the Microsoft Hololens but this may actually be a positive. It would be better for Microsoft to develop a higher quality, more content rich headset than to release it before it is ready.

The virtual reality
race is on.
