Right now virtual reality products that provide an actual VR experience are very expensive. The Oculus Rift, which is known to be the affordable option for a VR headset, will still cost you $500.
However, Microsoft has announced at its Windows 10 conference that it will be releasing an affordable $300 headset by early next year. This product will be an actual headset, not just a shell for your phone such as the GearVR or Google Cardboard.
Even with the cheaper price, Microsoft still promises to deliver 6DOF (Degrees of Freedom) Tracking. This is an advanced system that usually requires the use of an external camera, which brings up headset prices. However, Microsoft has apparently found a way to achieve 6DOF without any external hardware. This means that you can use your VR headset anywhere without a dedicated space or room for it.
The headset will be wired, meaning that you can't move too far from the source that your connected to. In addition, there hasn't been any special sort of controller announced which means you will have to either buy your own or just use a keyboard.
This new headset has the potential to bring virtual reality to a larger audience that just isn't ready to put out $500 to test the frontiers of technology. All technology is initially more expensive when it is first introduced into the market. This may be a step, however, to making VR accessible to the general public.
